What can I report? Well...I have had some moments at my current job but they were short lived.
I actually called the CEO up and gave him my thoughts. The CTO was on the call too. Two months later I got the "best of breed" equivalent at an annual awards ceremony. They say it had nothing to do with it. A week later I was at the corporate offices telling the VPs what I told the CEO and CTO. They are some of the most tense people I have ever been around in my life. It was in the midde of an ice storm. Somehow, my flight made it in and out anyway. I was nervous and have felt a little insane ever since.
I had about 3 weeks of this crazy buzz afterwards. I told one of my coworkers it was a "power contact high." It didn't last. I felt it ooze away. I admit it felt really really good. For a while, I thought I could do anything. I thought I was somebody special whose ideas mattered. It's hard to describe the surge of energy that kept me working compulsive obsessively for days on ends, straight through the weekend. What kind of crazy shit is that?
We are on Day 9 of the War in Iraq now. The conservatism of my coworkers is very scary to me and there is a lot that is going unsaid. I feel a strong desire to flee. Flee right now! At the same time, I feel like I should feel lucky to even be working. In truth, I really just want out. It's hard to breathe.
Monday, I found a couple of technology organizations with more altruistic goals than making gross amounts of profit.
http://www.digitalpartners.org/:
Digital Partners, a Seattle-based nonprofit institute*, taps the power of the
digital economy to develop market-based solutions that benefit the world's poor.
Digital Partners is working to cultivate a world in which all men, women, and
youths are able to reap the benefits of the Digital Revolution to improve the
quality of their lives.
http://www.networkforgood.org/:
An e-philanthropy site where individuals can donate, volunteer and speak out on
the issues they care about. The organization's goal is to connect people to
charities via the Internet — using the virtual world to deliver real resources
to nonprofits and communities.
Both are funded by corporate money.
Maybe I want to just take a year off and head to the hills. Maybe I could write a book or do some painting or learn how to play the piano or.........
